Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers

Three Teledyne RDI ADCPs are mounted in large subsurface floats on the mooring. These instruments collect water-column profiles of eastward, northward, and upward components of velocities between 620 and 2430 m depth, in bursts of (13) 3-s pings every 20 minutes. The burst timing is staggered between the three instruments to prevent acoustic interference.

Fig. 1. Contour plots

Contours of eastward, northward, and upward velocities from two Teledyne RDI ADCPs, over the entire deployment, as a function of time (x-axis) and depth (y-axis). For this plot, the single-ping data have been averaged over the 20-minute bursts, and vertically overlapping bins from the upward- and downward-looking instruments (~1200 m depth) have been removed for visual clarity.
